Chelsea Baker is a 17-year old pitcher from the Tampa suburb of Plant City who has made a name for herself thanks to the knuckleball that has helped her dominate male competition on the mound for her school’s baseball team. In her first varsity season, Baker posted a 3-0 record with just a 0.74 ERA.
On Monday, she got to baffle some more boys from the mound…except these boys were wearing Tampa Bay Ray uniforms. Rays manager Joe Maddon invited Baker to throw batting practice before Monday’s contest against the Pirates at the Trop, and it looks like she brought her A-stuff.
Her knuckler – taught to her by the late, great Joe Niekro – was impressive enough to get Evan Longoria to look silly at the dish. David Price knows a thing or two about great pitches and he was clearly impressed as well.
Considering the season the Rays have had this year, they might want to consider bringing on Baker full-time.
