Former Minnesota Twins manager Tom Kelly brought the club’s two World Series titles during his 16 years as manager (1986-2001) and remains a fan favorite, but the local broadcast gave the skipper a little too much credit Friday night.
Kelly, Ron Gardenhire’s predecessor, occasionally appears on Twins’ broadcasts, doing so Friday night against the Red Sox. A 5th inning on-screen graphic more than doubled his career win total, putting him in sole possession of 5th place on the career win mark, passing Lou Pinella (1,835 wins) and even Joe Torre (2,326).
Those 2,384 wins would force Kelly to average 149 wins in each of his 16 seasons, only 2 of which resulted in playoff appearances. Kelly won 1,140 games in those 16 seasons.
