Felix Hernandez has never pitched in the postseason. Today, Hernandez had a chance to push his team into the postseason for the first time since 2001, because if the A’s lost to Texas (again) and the Mariners pulled out a win, Seattle would host a one-game playoff for the right to go to the postseason.
The Mariners jumped out to a quick lead, but the A’s did too. Eventually, the A’s would clinch the last playoff spot in the American League. Once this happened, Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon opted to pull the King in the 6th inning. He exited having won the AL ERA title.
It was quite the scene shared between a player who has stayed loyal to Seattle instead of chasing success elsewhere, and a crowd well aware of Felix’s undying loyalty to Seattle.
