Mike Shannon has been around baseball for a long time, but the 79-year-old radio broadcaster always seems to amaze, or confuse at times. Shannon, a former player and now-longtime voice of the St. Louis Cardinals, is one of the best in the business, even if he does have a brain fart here and there.
During the Cardinals’ loss to the Pirates on Thursday night, they were down by five runs, at which time Shannon, who has been alive for 79 Cinco de Mayos asked the million-dollar question:
Classic moment from STL radio legend Mike Shannon: “Cardinals down by a cinco. When is Cinco de Mayo? Around May 1st or something?”

We really hope he’s kidding because he obviously knows what the Spanish word “cinco” translates to and he’s been around Spanish-speaking ballplayers for five decades, but we cannot be sure. And apparently it’s not the first time he’s wondered what day it’s on:
I’ll never forget when Mike Shannon asked John Rooney what day Cinco De Mayo was on. @Cardinals #CincoDeMayo
