The Colorado Rockies did their best ‘Bad News Bears’ impression on Saturday at Coors Field when they allowed the Milwaukee Brewers to score three runs on a wild pitch in the third inning. Yes, three runs, on one wild pitch.
With Brewers pitcher Wily Peralta at the dish on a 1-2 count and Milwaukee leading 5-2, Rockies left-hander Christian Friedrich threw a high fastball that got past catcher Michael McKenry to the backstop.
McKenry retrieved the ball and tried to throw out Aramis Ramirez at the plate, but his throw sailed wide towards the third-base dugout, allowing Mark Reynolds to also score.
Friedrich then picked the ball up and walked slowly back towards the infield, while a frustrated McKenry stood with his hands on knees at home plate. A heads-up Jean Segura noticed that the Rockies players weren’t paying attention to him, and sprinted home to score the Brewers’ third run on the play. That’s of course after Segura started the play as a runner on first base.
I don’t know what the meme name (ex. Barves, Cubes) is that’s used to describe when the Rockies do something hilariously awful, but never will it be more appropriate than after that play.
