Most “expert” predictions had the Red Sox returning to the top of the AL East behind a revamped roster that included Hanley Ramirez, Pablo Sandoval, Rick Porcello, Justin Masterson and others.
Some of the 90-plus win predictions got out of control but we still expected them to remain competitive in the wide-open AL East. Entering Tuesday they remained eight games under .500 and seven games out of first place. Their offensive numbers aren’t hideous, with five regulars batting over .270, but they’re having power issues and their pitching staff has the worst ERA in the AL.
