Belmont is considered far from a Division-I baseball powerhouse but the small Nashville school is suddenly making the rounds amongst the big boys this week. The Bruins took on UT-Martin on Sunday in a game that would’ve received little attention if not for something extraordinary. Unfortunately for UT-Martin, that something extraordinary happened and they were on the embarrassing end of it.
Belmont won 34-10, a score insane enough to turn some heads but how it happened was even more ridiculous. Four of their first batters hit home runs and they would add another eight bombs throughout the game, including seven in a 20-run sixth inning.
They hit SEVEN home runs in one inning. SEVEN. Belmont entered the game with 22 total home runs in 23 games this season and they hit SEVEN in one inning.
And the best part? They are a very average baseball team, having entered the game at 12-11 with very modest numbers against an unspectacular schedule. As pointed out by the Nashville Post, the 26 batters in the sixth inning broke a 22-year-old NCAA record but their seven dingers somehow fell one short of another record. Following Dom Veltri’s seventh inning grand slam, Belmont led 34-4 before UT-Martin put up six runs to make it a respectable 24-run loss.
