On Friday, an auction held by Steiner Sports for a baseball that was signed by Mickey Mantle and Joe DiMaggio sold for $12,051.60.
The baseball features a simple signature from DiMaggio but it also has an inscription from Mantle that reads “I’m sorry I spilled a drink on this fucker.”
As to who the “fucker” is that Mantle referred to when he signed the baseball, according to the people at Steiner Sports, Mantle was referring to DiMaggio, who he accidentally spilled a drink on at an event that both baseball legends attended.
It’s unclear exactly when Mantle signed the ball, but the people at Steiner Sports tell us Mantle signed it right after spilling a drink on DiMaggio at some sort of event back in the day.
Mantle was known for getting a little creative and mischievous when it came to his signature and calling Joe DiMaggio a “fucker” falls in line with some of the other Mantle memorabilia that has surfaced over the years. This is the man who signed a baseball “Fuck Yogi” after all.
