The baseball season is long, as are the 15 and 60-day disabled lists, as are the massive transaction lists for all 30 clubs, especially during the middle of a divisional race when every available arm or bat is crucial.
The average baseball fan can hardly remember their team’s starting nine and pitching rotation from this year’s opening day, let alone if a 10-year veteran outfielder was designated for assignment last week and subsequently scooped up 72 hours later by a club 3,000 miles away.
This neverending game of personnel musical chairs causes many household names to slip through the cracks, especially for that fan that didn’t even know Willie Bloomquist or LaTroy Hawkins were still on big league rosters.
Check out this list of eight guys that the average fan likely had no clue were still on active MLB rosters as of August 7th:
Roberto Hernandez (Fausto Carmona) – Los Angeles Dodgers
While most baseball fans are aware that Roberto Hernandez pitched for the Phillies in 2014 before being traded to the Dodgers on Thursday, most still have no clue that Hernandez is the one and only Fausto Carmona.
Hernandez pitched under the Fausto alias for six seasons in Cleveland before the name and age debacle caught up to him in 2012. He only made three starts in 2012, posting a massive 7.53 ERA in 14-plus innings before joining the Rays in 2013 where he rebounded adequately with a sub-5.00 ERA over 151 innings.
Before this week’s trade to L.A, Hernandez was posting his best season since 2010, starting 20 games and hitting a sub-4.00 ERA.
