Tennis fan or not, you have to admire what Roger Federer has done in his illustrious career. Federer tied the all-time Grand Slam match victories record (233) set by the great Jimmy Connors. Federer tied the record by beating German, Tobias Kamke 6-2, 7-5, 6-3 in the first round of the French Open on Monday.
Federer has earned 16 major championships in his career, and holds a dominate 233-35 record in the four top tournaments (French Open, Austrialian Open, USA Open and Wimbledon). Connors’ record at the top four tournaments was 233-49, putting him just behind Fed’s .869 winning percentage.
“Look, I obviously love the big tournaments,” he said. “I have been so successful for such a long time, and to already tie that record (at) 30 years old is pretty incredible, so I’m very happy.”
“You step back, you realize you have been playing for quite a long time. … When I started, I loved playing against those famous players I used to see on TV. Now I’m playing against younger players, a new generation,” he said. “It’s great I didn’t suffer that many injuries over these years. And I always had fun playing tennis.”
The record will undoubtedly be Fed’s assuming he defeats his next opponent, Adrian Ungur on Wednesday.
