A dark week in sports unfortunately took another life in Dutch soccer only a few hours ago. Following a 15 and 16 year-old match between Nieuw Sloten and Buitenboys, assistant referee Richard Nieuwenhuizen was kicked and beaten by multiple Nieuw Sloten players following the game and immediately rushed to the hospital in critical condition.
Earlier today, he passed away at the age of 41. Awful.
Three Nieuw Sloten players have been arrested and are under custody. A man who regularly volunteered as referee for the youth match, Niewenhuizen was a father of a Buitenboys player.
