This week, Rory McIlroy had a brutal showing in the final round of the U.S. Open in which he missed two crucial putts to allow Bryson DeChambeau to win the championship. DeChambeau’s victory prompted a lengthy congratulations from former United States President Donald Trump that also seemed like a not-so-subtle shot at McIlroy which just adds another chapter to a little bit of bad blood between Trump and McIlroy.
Rory McIlroy has previously made it very clear that he is not a fan of Donald Trump. During an interview back in 2020, McIlroy addressed a round of golf he played with Trump back in 2017, claiming that he had not played with him since and refused to do it again in the future. McIlroy claimed he enjoyed golfing with him, but disagreed with nearly everything about him.
“So I will sit here and say that day I had with him I enjoyed,” McIlroy said back in 2020, according to ESPN. “But that doesn’t mean I agree with everything — or, in fact, anything — that he says.”
He went on to blast Trump for politicizing everything, including the COVID-19 pandemic as he claimed the U.S. had administered more COVID tests than any other country.
“Like it’s a contest,” McIlroy said. “There’s some stuff that just is terrible. It’s not the way a leader should act. There is a bit of diplomacy that you need to show, and I just don’t think he’s showing that, especially in these times.”
McIlroy then made it clear that he wouldn’t play golf with Trump again.
“I don’t know if he’d want to play with me again after what I just said,” McIlroy said. “I know it’s very self-serving of me to say no, and if I don’t, then it means I’m not putting myself in position to be under scrutiny and that I’m avoiding that.
“But no, I wouldn’t.”
Needless to say, he is clearly not a fan of the former president.
