After two years of rivalry, the PGA Tour and LIV Golf are working toward a sort of alliance that would help to re-unify professional golf. But even though the two sides have been negotiating for months, it doesn’t sound like a deal is imminent just yet.
This week, PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan gave an update about the current negotiations regarding the alliance with LIV Golf as he made it clear that while they have agreed on “several items,” a deal is not yet done and “there is work to be done” before an alliance is finalized.
“As we’ve said in the past — we can’t negotiate in public — but we are making progress,” Monahan told the PGA Tour policy board, according to a memo obtained by ESPN. “Two weeks ago, members of our PGA Tour Enterprises transaction subcommittee met in New York with Yasir Al-Rumayyan, the Governor of the PIF, as well as members of his team. During that meeting, we reached consensus on several items, but both parties recognize that there is still work to do to reach a final agreement.
“Our talks are ongoing, with the goal of developing a shared vision for the future of professional golf that is pro-competitive and provides players with the best global opportunities.”
Obviously, everyone is anxiously awaiting that final deal to reunify professional golf, and that wait is going to continue a little while longer.
