Prior to Tuesday, there were set to be 13 LIV Golf members participating in the 2024 U.S. Open at Pinehurst Resort and Country Club, which is set to begin on Thursday. However, there will be one less LIV member in the field now after perhaps the biggest threat on the tour was forced to withdraw from the tournament.
2021 U.S. Open winner Jon Rahm was forced to withdraw from the LIV Houston event this past weekend due to an infected sore in between his pinky toe.
He still made the trip to Pinehurst, North Carolina to see if the sore perhaps got any better ahead of his opening round on Thursday. But it seems like things haven’t gotten much better, as Rahm decided on Tuesday to officially withdraw from the tournament, which he announced on social media.
“After consulting with numerous doctors and my team, I have decided it is best for my long-term health, to withdraw from this week’s US Open Championship,” wrote Rahm in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter. “To say I’m disappointed is a massive understatement! I wish all my peers the best of luck and want to thank all of the USGA staff, volunteers, and community of Pinehurst for hosting and putting on what I’m sure will be an amazing championship! Hopefully I’ll be back in action sooner than later!”
Of all the LIV Golf players that were in the field, it can be argued that Rahm, along with Brooks Koepka, has the best track record in the U.S. Open in past years. Of the five last U.S. Open’s, Rahm has three top-10 finishes, and two top-five finishes, including his 2021 victory.
