One of the biggest differences between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf is the format of the tournaments. While the PGA Tour has 72-hole events, LIV Golf events are only 54 holes – a round shorter than the PGA Tour. But based on some recent comments from LIV Golf star Phil Mickelson, it sounds like there’s a chance that could be changing.
During a recent interview following the final round of the Masters this weekend, Phil Mickelson seemed to suggest that there was a possibility that LIV Golf could change its format, saying that he “wouldn’t be surprised” if LIV changed some or all of its events to a 72-hole format, instead.
“”I don’t think it matters either way. Each competitive round is an opportunity to progress and get better. There are guys out on the Tour, players who only do 36 holes. A lot of guys only play 36 this week,” Mickelson said according to Golf Monthly.
“Every competitive round is an opportunity to play well and compete. I don’t think it makes a difference either way. We’ve got mini-tours playing 54, Champions Tour playing 54. I wouldn’t be surprised if some or all of LIV events went to 72. I don’t know, but it doesn’t matter. I enjoy the competition.”
Obviously, this possibility led to a lot of reactions on social media.
