Former American president is planning to redesign one of his most prestigious properties in hopes of the Open Championship returning to the fold.
According to The Times of Scotland, Trump is redesigning the famous Ailsa links at Turnberry in hopes of convincing golf’s governing body that it’s worthy of the prestigious championship.
As The Times noted, Turnberry, on the Ayrshire coast, hosted the Open four times, but not since 2009.
Trump, however, will have to do some work to convince the Royal & Ancient, golf’s governing body, that he’s worthy of their business.
After the Capitol riots on January 6th, 2021, declared it had zero intentions of returning the Open Championship to Turnberry and would not do so in “the foreseeable future.”
But Trump is set to earn the Republican nomination for the presidency in 2024. On Monday night, he clinched over 50 percent of the vote in the initial Iowa Caucus.
Trump previously hired golf architect Martin Ebert to upgrade the course.
“The proposed alterations are to enhance the overall golfing experience for all members and visitors and to facilitate the return of The Open Championship to Turnberry and South Ayrshire,” the planning consultancy said in a statement to The Times.
Only time will tell if Trump is successful in luring the Open Championship back to Turnberry.
