On Sunday afternoon, Rory McIlroy suffered a devastating disappointment at the U.S. Open when he missed two short putts in the final round to allow Bryson DeChambeau to claim the championship, instead. And it sounds like former United States President Donald Trump is mocking McIlroy as a result.

Following the conclusion of the tournament, Donald Trump took to Truth Social to congratulate Bryson DeChambeau, but some of the things he said in his congratulatory message seemed to be subtle shots at Rory McIlroy.

Trump praised DeChambeau for his “toughness and inner strength,” while he was under “massive pressure,” which some saw as a shot at McIlroy, who obviously choked under that same pressure. Trump also praised DeChambeau for representing the United States (McIlroy is from Ireland) and highlighted his performance on the 18th hole specifically, where McIlroy missed a crucial putt that ultimately cost him the tournament.

“Congratulations to Bryson DeChambeau on his incredible WIN of the United States Open! He showed a toughness and inner strength, matched perfectly with his GREAT Golfing Talent, that can never be denied! Under massive pressure, he pulled off some of the greatest shots ever made, especially his spectacular sand save on the 18th Hole that gave him the Victory. ‘Mr. 58’ has always been a WINNER, and will go on to many more Major Championships. He is a truly tough competitor, even a nasty one, but he also happens to be a great guy. The U.S.A. could not be better represented,” Trump said in his post on Truth Social.

Trump also went out of his way to praise LIV Golf, the Saudi-backed league that McIlroy heavily criticized for many months.

“Congratulations also to LIV Golf for their genius in signing Bryson and other of the best Golfers in the World,” Trump said. “Hopefully Golf will soon come together as one, fully united, which is the way it should be!”

Of course, this comes after McIlroy absolutely blasted Trump for his poor leadership a few years ago, and Trump is known to hold grudges.

Needless to say, Trump’s message sure seems full of subtle shots at McIlroy, and people had a lot to say about it on social media as a result.

We’ll never know whether or not the shade was intentional by the former president, but it sure seems like it.
