On Sunday afternoon, Bryson DeChambeau was able to out-duel PGA Tour superstar Rory McIlroy to claim the U.S. Open championship thanks in large part to a horrible miss by McIlroy on a short putt on the 18th hole. But after the event, DeChambeau had quite a class message for McIlroy.
During his interview after the victory, Bryson DeChambeau opened up a little bit about the brutal missed putt from Rory McIlroy as he expressed his respect for his competitor while saying he would “never wish” that sort of miss on anybody, even if it did help him win the championship on Sunday.
“Rory is one of the best to ever play,” DeChambeau said after the tournament according to ESPN. “Being able to fight against a great like that is pretty special. For him to miss that putt, I’d never wish it on anybody. It just happened to play out that way.”
Obviously, this is a pretty classy message from DeChambeau to his competitor, and it led to a lot of reactions on social media as a result.
More love for the new Bryson. https://t.co/3QLGaTIsmG

Want to say. Bryson’s words after the round were classy. Been great to see him mature and grow as a human the past few years. His shot into 18 was sensational, Rory made it a lot easier but to get that bunker shot to 4 feet was ridiculously good and stopped our play off chances.

Despite anyone thoughts on LIV & LIV golfers, @b_dechambeau has showed pure class today. We’re seeing a new level of maturity from Bryson but he also showed real kindness, gratefulness, & appreciation today. He shook every single persons hand & looked them in the eye. 👍

McIlroy, meanwhile, declined to do any interviews after the incredibly disappointing loss as he left the course almost immediately following the event.
