In what most consider to be one of – if not the – toughest trophies to win on the PGA Tour, Ernie Els has won the elusive Open Championship. Els birdied 18 to take a one stroke lead over Adam Scott who hit four straight bogeys to finish at 6-under.
Els started six shots behind the lead going into Sunday, but kept his cool and edged out Scott, shooting 2-under for the day to finish at 7-under for the Tournament.
Scott would have the first Australian to win The Open since his idol Greg Norman did it in 1993. He had never held a lead going into the final round of a Major, before Sunday.
Tiger Woods was in the conversation entering Sunday, just five strokes off the lead, but it was his triple-bogey on 6 that all but put an end to his hopes of winning his 15th Major. Woods finished third at 3-under. He has never won a Major tournament when trailing entering the final round. He is now 0 for 17 when within five shots of the lead.
