NFL teams searching for an hugely popular quarterback with no arm, today is your lucky day. The New York Jets released backup quarterback Tim Tebow on Monday morning. The Jets drafted Geno Smith, West Virginia Mountaineers all-time leader for career touchdown passes with their 7th pick in the second round to add to an already quarterback heavy roster. Besides Smith, New York has disappointing Mark Sanchez, injury-plagued David Garrard and unproven Greg McElroy all vying for the starting quarterback job. Tebow ends his 13-month tenure on the Jets having made more headlines than complete passes.
On Monday morning Jets coach Rex Ryan commented on Tebow’s time in New York by saying:
We have a great deal of respect for Tim Tebow. Unfortunately, things did not work out the way we all had hoped. Tim is an extremely hard worker, evident by the shape he came back in this offseason. We wish him the best moving forward.”
The Jets cleared a roster spot and $1 million in salary cap space by cutting Tebow, but the team will owe the polarizing quarterback $1.5 million if no other NFL teams pick him up, which is definitely a possibility.
