Eddie, a 16-year-old sea otter at the Oregon Zoo, is no ordinary sea otter. He has one incredible talent–he can dunk.
Eddie was rescued from the wild off of the California coast and brought to the Oregon Zoo in 2000 because he was not able to survive in the wild on his own. Being that most sea otters only live for 15-20 years, Eddie is definitely an elderly sea otter, but that hasn’t stopped him from learning new tricks.
Eddie suffers from arthritis in his elbows, so he was trained by lead sea otter trainer Jenny DeGroot to dunk in order to help work his elbow joints. Eddie doesn’t perform this act for guests of the zoo, but the Oregon Zoo gave us a sneak peek of Eddie in action and it is adorable. He is (as far as we know) the only sea otter that can dunk.
