In shocking and completely unexpected news out of Beantown, CBS Sports’ Jon Heyman is reporting the Boston Red Sox plan to fire Little League manager and cartoon character Bobby Valentine immediately following the conclusion of the regular season.
The initial move to hire Valentine was mysterious from Day 1 as he replaced one of the most popular managers in the game over the last decade and following a whirlwind season it appears his ‘miserable’ stint and likely last MLB managerial job will be over by Thursday or Friday.
Minor dugout conflicts, fried chicken, clubhouse beer runs, and late-September meltdowns under former skipper Terry Francona seem like the good ‘ol days as the Red Sox will finish the 2012 season in the AL East cellar, 20+ games out of first. Repeated excuses, including rips to his coaching staff in this afternoon’s press conference prior to the season finale, and public player criticism will not win over many front offices or fan bases.
