Back in 2011, Nike released the Mag — a replica of Marty McFly’s high tops from Back to the Future Part II — for a 1,500-pair limited run that saw celebrities and hype beasts alike stumbling over each other to land the coveted fictional-but-suddenly-real shoe. The eBay auctions racked up nearly $6 million, all of which went to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research. The only problem was, as real looking as the shoes were, there was one thing missing: power laces. Instead of the the nifty, relatively hands-free system depicted in the film, anyone who wanted to wear the rare shoe had to strap in the old-fashioned way, with regular shoe laces. And, well, ain’t nobody got time for that, amirite?
Well, we have some good news for fans of power laces, because Tinker Hatfield, the godfather of modern athletic shoe design (and the guy who designed the shoe for the film), made an appearance at Jordan Brand’s Flight Lab in New Orleans Friday and was asked point blank about the possibility of power laces:
“Are we gonna see power laces in 2015? To that, I say YES!” said Hatfield.
Sole Collector couldn’t confirm if the shoe will be an updated Mag, or another shoe altogether. However, we do know one thing: it’s gonna be a bloodbath at the local sneaker shop.
