LeBron James will soon not be the only Cleveland Cavalier with a signature Nike shoe. Today, at a Nike Basketball event, the Swoosh and Kyrie Irving unveiled Irving’s first signature basketball shoe.
Taking the stage with Charles Barkley, Kenny Smith and Penny Hardaway, Irving showcased a red colorway of the shoe while he wore a black pair of the Kyrie 1’s.
The move shows that Nike has a huge amount of faith in Kyrie’s future as an NBA star. The last professional basketball player to get his own signature shoe from Nike was some dude named Kevin Durant and that happened IN 2007.
Irving will reportedly debut the Kyrie 1 on the court tomorrow, when the Cavs play the Knicks. Both the red and black colorways will be available to the general public just in time for Christmas on December 23rd.
As for the shoes themselves, they certainly stand out. Nike Basketball has been moving towards mesh-like materials for their signature sneakers and while that can lead to similar looking silhouettes, Nike has been smart about making sure that each of their signature athletes’ shoes looks unique. The Kyrie 1s use of geometric shapes on the heel is a pretty great way to turn heads.
