Losing a state championship is difficult, but losing a father is much, much more difficult. That’s something Malik Stewart clearly understands, having lost his dad to a heart attack when he was younger.
The high school wrestler found himself on the losing end of the Minnesota state championship at the 120-pound weight class. Stewart lost to Mitchell McKee, whose father was in attendance to see his son’s marvelous achievement. It was a shining moment for McKee and for his dad, who is battling cancer. Stewart is friendly with McKee and knew of his dad’s plight so, instead of walking off angry that he lost, Stewart walked over to McKee’s dad to give him a hug and tell him to keep fighting.
This goes beyond sports. This goes beyond sportmanship. This is the actions of young man with a heart of gold and what all of humanity should strive to achieve.
