In “News That Will Make You Feel Old”, tonight marks the tenth anniversary of the debut of The O.C., Josh Schwartz’s indie-rock vehicle that introduced us to Ryan Atwood, Marissa Cooper, Summer Roberts, the Cohen Clan, and a whole bunch of bands nobody had ever heard of. We weren’t prepared to fall in love a decade ago, and, in that spirit, we weren’t really prepared to give a proper homage today (I’ve never been good at the whole birthday thing anyway).
Fortunately, some other people have picked up the slack, giving the show its proper due:
- Alan Sepinwall conducted a two-part, in-depth interview with creator Josh Schwartz (also responsible for my favorite guilty pleasure show of all time, Gossip Girl), where no stone is left unturned.
- The Huffington Post listed the “21 Most Important Musical Moments From ‘The O.C.'”, which is kind of redundant because they were, like, all important, man.
- The Awl (in January of this year) discusses “What Made ‘The O.C.’ Great, Bitch”, where you will find out very interesting things, like the fact UC Berkeley actually has a Sandy Cohen Public Defender Fellowship program.
Finally, comedian Paul Scheer directs us to College Humor, where his two-minute recap of Season 1 lives on forever:
