Last weekend college football fans were treated to the Annual SEC Cupcake Extravaganza and now this week they’re being treated to the Annual SEC Cupcake Extravaganza Controversy.
The week in late November that sees multiple SEC teams schedule wildly inferior FBS or FCS foes during a typical conference week has been blasted by critics since the wave became popular many years ago. The ESPN College GameDay crew discussed this decision to schedule an easy late-season and it drew the ire of Western Carolina head coach Mark Speir.
Here’s the clip from GameDay:
And here was Speir’s reaction to Herbstreit’s comments:
A guy had a silver spoon in his mouth all his life, Ohio State, primadonna state quarterback talking about, ‘It’s an embarrassment. He ain’t ever coached.
The very critical comments are justified in that no SEC cupcake opponent is thrilled with the attention that their teams get for collecting a fat check in exchange for an utter beatdown, but the type of criticism was embarrassing for Speir and other teams in their shoes.
