The Washington Capitals and Chicago Blackhawks will face off at Nationals Park on New Year’s Day in the 2015 Winter Classic, but the lead-up to the outdoor game won’t be as entertaining as it has been in years past.
That’s because HBO confirmed Wednesday that they will not be airing their annual 24/7: Road To The Winter Classic behind-the-scenes miniseries this year. The news will undoubtedly have many hockey fans bummed, as the series was extremely popular among those who follow the game.
’24/7′ did seem to get a bit stale last year when it featured the Maple Leafs and Red Wings, but it’s still disappointing that we won’t get to follow the adventures of Alex Ovechkin and Patrick Kane this winter. The network has left the door open for the series to return somewhere down the road but, for now, we’ll have to live without it.
I’ll miss you too, Liev Schreiber’s golden pipes.
Update: A league spokesman said that a new Winter Classic all-access show would air via a different partner. That announcement will be made September 23 at Nationals Park when the jerseys are unveiled. (via)
