Game of Thrones, HBO’s star TV show that isn’t afraid to get R-rated in a hurry, is facing a bit of a problem. The show, currently filming for its fifth season, is in the middle of a dispute with a Croatian church.
WARNING: Spoilers are below. If you haven’t read the books and don’t want season five of the show spoiled for you, stop reading now.
For those of you who have read the books, you probably remember the scene in which Cersei Lannister is forced to strip naked and walk in public in King’s Landing. The moment is crucial to the story, as it symbolizes Cersei’s fall from power and grace. However, the show is having trouble filming the scene because the local film commission in Dubrovnik, Croatia won’t let Lena Headey walk naked in front of the church that was supposed to be the filming location.
The producers can’t cut the scene because it’s both iconic and incredibly important for Cersei’s storyline, so it looks like they’ll have to find another location to film the scene.
In terms of the importance of the scene, Headey spoke about it to Vulture when she was asked about her lack of nudity in the show and the possibility of a body double:
I’ve said from day one that I’ve got no problem with nudity. I’ve done it throughout my career. But for this character, it’s been better for her regality and her feistiness to not bare her flesh until she has to. When it’s out of her control. And if that ever happens, it won’t be Cersei being seductive or sexy. She’ll be stripped. That kind of a scene will have more power if it’s not an everyday occurrence. I can’t wait for that.”
Obviously, Headey never directly references the scene mentioned above, but there’s no doubt that she was thinking about this scene when making that statement. Let’s hope the producers can work something out.
