Every sports fan has seen it, likely dozens of times, but it never gets old. Jim Valvano, the former Bucknell, Iona and North Carolina State men’s basketball coach was diagnosed with cancer in June 1992 and after unsuccessful treatments arrived at the 1993 ESPY’s with little time left.

He received the Arthur Ashe Courage Award and subsequently delivered the best moment in ESPY’s history and one of the most important speeches in American sports history. Valvano would pass away at the age of 47 just six weeks after the event.

To date, The V Foundation for Cancer Research has raised over $53 million for cancer research since its inception in 1993.
