This single gained mainstream popularity in part by being featured on the Wayne’s World movie soundtrack in 1992 (someday I’ll have to write a post on Wayne’s World, it’s probably worthy of several blogs on it’s own). The funny thing about the song is that if you ignore the “I hate everything about you” chorus (and disregard the blowup dolls), it’s actually a pretty happy sounding tune; especially when you watch them in the video hanging out at the beach.
I didn’t notice that 20 years ago, I guess the Ugly Kid Joe guys weren’t really as angry as I thought they were. That makes a lot of sense when you consider they had another big hit the following year with a remake of Harry Chapin’s 1974 record “Cat’s in the Cradle.”
