USC Trojans Jerome Miron-USA TODAY Sports

The USC Trojans have had a strange season.

After starting the year with an eye-popping victory over the LSU Tigers in Las Vegas, the Trojans struggled to find consistent play and finished the regular season 6-6.

Quarterback Miller Moss started the season under center for the Trojans. He was replaced in mid-November by Jayden Maivia, as the team needed two wins in its final three games to gain bowl eligibility.

Maivia has been successful, throwing for over 800 yards and seven touchdown passes in the three games, including a season-high 360 yards in USC’s season finale loss to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.

With USC seemingly having no plans to switch back to Moss, the quarterback will be entering the transfer portal.

ESPN’s Pete Thamel had the news first on Monday.

“I really enjoyed my time at USC,” Moss told ESPN. “It was transformative for my life as a whole and for me growing up for the last few years. I’m thankful. I gave that program everything I had,”

Moss spent his first three seasons at USC primarily as a backup, backing up Kedon Slovis and Jaxson Dart during his freshman season and Caleb Williams during his sophomore and junior seasons.

In the team’s 2023 Holiday Bowl appearance against the Louisville Cardinals, he made his first career start for USC.

Moss put himself on the map in that contest, throwing six touchdown passes in the 42-28 victory.

It seemed Moss’s success would continue in his first season as the starter. In nine starts for USC, he went 233-for-362 for 2,555 passing yards and 18 touchdowns to nine interceptions. His 18 touchdowns were the fifth-most among Big Ten quarterbacks.

The transfer portal opens on Monday, December 9, as college football’s regular season has concluded. The portal is allowed to officially open the day after all bowl games have been announced.

Moss will have one year of eligibility remaining.
