This week, the USC Trojans were hit with a pretty surprising turn of events when five-star freshman quarterback Malaki Nelson chose to enter the NCAA transfer portal. With Nelson leaving and star quarterback Caleb Williams almost certainly headed to the NFL, the team is going to have to make some moves in the transfer portal.
During a recent press conference, USC Trojans head coach Lincoln Riley admitted that Malaki Nelson’s decision to leave was “a little unexpected” and said there’s a chance that USC will take up to two transfer quarterbacks this cycle to help compensate for the loss.
“Now, with him gone, it certainly changes things. Now that you’ve got a pretty big gap in the program in terms of where Miller [Moss] currently sits being, obviously, kind of down the line in his career. So, we are certainly going to look at taking a younger quarterback and we’re looking at options there. It’s obviously a very intriguing position for obvious reasons. So, starting to sift through some of those options because that choice for us will be an important choice,” Riley said.
“So, certainly, the possibility right now exists that we could take as many as two quarterbacks in the portal. Potentially one older one and one younger one.”
It will certainly be an interesting offseason for USC as they try to address the game’s most important position.
