Colorado star quarterback Shedeur Sanders is expected to be a highly coveted player when he does ultimately declare for the NFL Draft. And according to Sanders, this is because he decided to go to a private high school in Texas, instead of a public one.
In a recent press conference, Sanders decided to take a dig at Texas high school football, particularly Class 6A, the UIL’s largest classification.
“I came from a private school, so at the end of the day, I’ve dealt with all of the negativity and hate year after year,” said Sanders in a video shared by Texas morning show host Blake Munroe. “I came from a small private school. All of the other kids were going Power Five at big 6A Texas schools. I don’t see those same kids around excelling in their programs or whatever they are doing. I’ve always been against the odds in different ways.”

Sanders was the No. 37 ranked quarterback in the 2020 recruiting class. So he isn’t exactly wrong in the fact that he was an overlooked recruit coming out of high school.
However, many thought that his take on Texas 6A football may be a bit skewed, especially because a ton of big-name players have excelled in both college and ultimately at the NFL level in recent years.
At the quarterback position alone, Texas 6A quarterback prospects have been wildly successful in college, with big-name quarterbacks like Baker Mayfield, Jalen Hurts, Kyler Murray, Jalen Milroe, and Quinn Ewers all coming out of Texas public schools.
It’s clear what Sanders was trying to do here, which is establish that he has an underdog story that fans should root for. However, his take on Texas 6A football not leading to success is certainly a bit incorrect.
