The Ohio State Buckeyes had a pretty high-profile quarterback battle this offseason that was ultimately won by Kyle McCord after he beat out Devin Brown, but it sounds like head coach Ryan Day is planning to use both quarterbacks going forward.
During this week’s game against the Purdue Boilermakers, Ryan Day subbed Devin Brown into the game in place of Kyle McCord in the red zone, making use of Brown’s running ability in short-yardage situations. And it sounds like Day plans to do this more in the future as he said the team will “continue to build on that package.”
“We had been messing around a little bit with it, but felt like going into that game with the weather situation, we can’t get caught in a situation like we had in the past,” Day said according to On3. “So that was part of it. Then we added that down in the red zone and felt like it was a good package schematically. Wanted to let Devin go and kind of get his feet wet in that area and flush out any possible mistakes that may happen.
“I thought he ran hard. I thought he competed. He hopefully learned his lesson there on that one, but it certainly does give us a different wrinkle and we’ll continue to build on that package.”
The Buckeyes have a big game this week against the Penn State Nittany Lions. It will be interesting to see whether or not the Buckeyes make use of this package on Saturday.
