Ever since Ryan Day arrived at Ohio State ahead of the 2017 college football season, he has called plays for the Buckeyes, even once he became the team’s head coach in 2019. But that’s going to change this season.
During his press conference Wednesday, Ryan Day announced that he will be giving up play-calling duties this upcoming season after hiring offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien.
It’s a pretty big move from Day, who did acknowledge that it was a difficult decision for him to give up play-calling duties after calling plays at Ohio State for the past seven years.
“I haven’t done it yet, so we’ll see,” Day joked, before saying that O’Brien “checked all the boxes” for what he was looking for in a play-caller and a coordinator.
“I know that is an ideal situation moving forward,” Day said of the decision to give up play-calling duties. “Do I want to? No. I don’t. I love the football part of it.”
There is a chance that O’Brien will leave Ohio State before he even gets a chance to coach a game with the Buckeyes as he is a candidate for the Boston College coaching job. But it sounds like Day is committed to giving up play-calling duties even if it isn’t with O’Brien.
