While it used to be a somewhat rare occurrence, it has now become common for star college football players to opt out of bowl games to prepare for the NFL Draft or to enter the NCAA transfer portal. And Ohio State Buckeyes head coach Ryan Day hopes that changes in the future.
During a press conference following Ohio State’s loss to the Missouri Tigers, Ryan Day called for changes that could prevent that from happening.
“I hope so. I hope there’s something, because you have key pieces missing and it’s just not the same team that you played with a month ago,” Day said according to On3. “But that’s (no) excuse, it’s just the way it is. We’ve got to go win the game. But I feel like absolutely. Maybe with the playoff that will change things as well.”
Ohio State was down three starters in the game as superstar wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. opted out to prepare for the NFL Draft and starting quarterback Kyle McCord and receiver Julian Fleming. Without those three players, Ohio State managed just three points in the 14-3 loss.
We’ll have to see whether or not the NCAA makes any significant changes to prevent things like that from happening in the future.
