When the Ohio State Buckeyes decided to bring in Kansas State Wildcats transfer quarterback Will Howard this offseason, it was widely expected that he would be the starting quarterback for the Buckeyes this upcoming season. But in a surprising twist, Howard was not the first-team quarterback when the Buckeyes began spring practice on Tuesday morning.

According to a report from Ohio State Buckeyes beat writers Dan Hope and Andy Anders of Eleven Warriors, quarterback Devin Brown took the first-team reps with the Ohio State offense ahead of Will Howard when the Buckeyes opened spring practice on Tuesday morning.

“Ohio State didn’t insert transfer quarterback Will Howard at the top of the depth chart right away on day one. Devin Brown led the quarterback line for Tuesday’s opening practice and took the initial first-team reps during 11-on-11 work,” Eleven Warriors reported on Tuesday.

Obviously, this is a pretty shocking turn of events given that most fans expected Howard to be the starter this fall, and it led to a lot of reactions on social media as a result.

Brown made it clear this week that he had no intention of transferring despite the addition of Howard, saying “I’m going to compete no matter what.” And it seems like he’ll be given that chance.

We’ll have to see whether or not Howard beats him out.
