Earlier this season, the Michigan Wolverines were hit with an NCAA investigation into an alleged illegal sign-stealing scheme. But as the Alabama Crimson Tide prepares for their College Football Playoff showdown with Michigan, it doesn’t sound like they’ll be too focused on Michigan’s signal stealing.
During a recent press conference, Nick Saban made it clear that he isn’t really all that concerned with Michigan’s sign-stealing scandal heading into this matchup.
“Not really,” Saban said according to On3. “We always change things up a little bit. We’re focused on what we have to do to try to get good execution. We’re not really concerned about any of that stuff.”
Even though Saban is not all that concerned with the possibility of Michigan stealing signs, he is an advocate for something that would render signal-stealing obsolete: in-helmet communication.
“I do think the helmet communicator is probably a real powerful thing for the game,” Saban said back in October. “Everybody should — you can’t steal signs or do any of this stuff if you have a helmet communicator and I think it’s, I think it would be a good thing.
“It’s worked out well in the NFL and I also think it’s good to have one guy on defense that you could tell that guy what the call is without having to go through all this signaling process.”
We’ll have to see if college football decides to embrace this change.
