After the Michigan Wolverines beat the Ohio State Buckeyes in 2021, then Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh had a pretty brutal assessment of Ohio State head coach Ryan Day, suggesting that Day was “born on third base thinking he hit a triple.” And he seemed to call back to those comments this week.
During an interview at the NFL’s annual league meetings on Monday, Jim Harbaugh was talking about his new Los Angeles Chargers staff when he seemed to reference the comments he once directed at Day.
“Everybody in that building, no one was born on third base. Everyone had to work their way to first,” Harbaugh said according to NFL insider Albert Breer of SI.

Obviously, Harbaugh has a winning record against Day, beating the Ohio State Buckeyes in 2021, 2022, and 2023. Harbaugh suffered just one loss to Day in the rivalry, losing in 2019 – Day’s first season as the head coach of the Buckeyes. The 2020 edition of The Game was ultimately canceled as a result of a COVID-19 outbreak within Michigan’s program.
It’s not completely clear whether or not Harbaugh was intentionally calling back to his comments toward Day, but it was certainly hard for anyone to think anything else based on those words.
