Jim Harbaugh and the Michigan Wolverines football program is in hot water once again.
The NCAA is investigation the Wolverines for “allegedly violating rules that prohibit teams from scouting, in person, future opponents” industry sources told Yahoo! Sports.
The allegation cites NCAA Bylaw 11.6.1 which reads: “Off-campus, in-person scouring of future opponents (in the same season) is prohibited.”
The NCAA already notified the Big Ten about the investigation into Michigan, a league spokesperson told Yahoo! The spokesperson declined to confirm any more details.
“Teams are normally provided extensive video footage to scout opponents. At issue, according to sources, is whether Michigan is using unnamed individuals to attend games of both scheduled opponents and possible College Football Playoff opponents in an effort to gather information on the signs they use to call both offensive and defensive plays,” Yahoo! noted in the report.
It’s currently unknown if the NCAA believes that Michigan used staffers or “others who may be loyal to the program.” It’s also unclear whether information was detailed via video “or some other means” or if the allegations specifically involve Harbaugh.
Two of Michigan’s opponents this season told Yahoo! that became aware Michigan stole their signs. Stealing signs has been somewhat of a “gray area” according to the report and teams routinely switch up signals to guard gainst it.
Clemson, under head coach Dabo Swinney and then-defensive coordinator Brent Venables, have been accused of such endeavors in the past.
Nevertheless, the college football world was quick to react to the horrible news for the Wolverines:
