College football is going through some major changes as the sport faces a major wave of conference re-alignment, and it seems that one team is getting assistance from a former United States president to make sure they are best positioned for the future.
According to a recent report from college football insider Pat Forde of Sports Illustrated, former United States President George W. Bush is lobbying on behalf of the SMU Mustangs in an attempt to convince the ACC to get the school invited to the conference.
“Those schools and a third aspiring member, SMU, have been enlisting ‘big guns’ to lobby on their behalf. Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has been making calls on behalf of Stanford, as has internet innovator Jerry Yang. SMU, meanwhile, has enlisted former President George W. Bush, one source says,” Forde wrote for Sports Illustrated on Wednesday.
While Bush has no strong personal connection with SMU after he attended both Harvard and Yale for his college education, he has since become a fan and major supporter of the SMU athletic program after moving to Dallas following his presidency.
We’ll have to see if Bush’s attempts to get SMU into the ACC are successful.
