The Ohio State Buckeyes and Texas Longhorns are set to face off in the Cotton Bowl Classic on Friday evening, one of the College Football Playoff semifinals. However, there’s a possibility the game might be postponed due to incoming inclement weather.
The Dallas area is bracing for temperatures in the 30s on Thursday, accompanied by a wintry mix and an 83 percent chance of precipitation. Conditions are expected to worsen on Friday, the day of the game.
Friday’s forecast predicts temperatures could drop as low as 25 degrees, with strong winds and morning snow. Some reports even suggest the region could see up to 12 inches of snow.
While the game itself will be played indoors at AT&T Stadium, which has a covered roof, the severe weather may pose challenges for travel plans affecting fans, teams, and event personnel.
For now, the game remains on schedule. However, it seems Cotton Bowl officials are preparing for potential contingencies.
On Monday, Cotton Bowl organizers released a statement reaffirming the current schedule while noting they are “monitoring” the weather and “have plans for inclement weather.”
“We are routinely monitoring weather reports and we are in close contact with AT&T Stadium and local officials. We always have plans for inclement weather. Should conditions warrant it, we will communicate to everyone attending and connected with this year’s Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic,” the statement read, according to Fox 4.
Needless to say, this whole situation led to a lot of reactions on social media.
“Saturday, 8 PM EST would be lovely. I don’t like the Friday kickoff personally,” one fan wrote on X.
“It blows my mind that southern states don’t put any sort of money towards snow removal. I get it. It rarely happens. But being prepared isn’t a bad thing either. Hopefully the game is a go Friday,” someone else wrote.
“If they really get 8 inches of snow in the DFW, there is a real chance this game could be delayed,” another person wrote.
“Something to keep an eye on for Buckeye fans! Texas could get dumped on with snow, and my guess is they’re not prepared to handle that kind of weather. Would hate to see it have to be pushed back, but it’s looking like it could very much happen,” someone else suggested.
“Sure would be great to get 72 hour notice to be able to change reservations and everything else,” someone else suggested.
“No way they move the game over some snow,” someone else speculated.
“Interesting to see what they decide to do,” another person added.
The game is currently scheduled to kick off at 7:30 p.m. ET in Arlington, Texas. We’ll have to see whether or not that changes.
