After falling in the first round of the College Football Playoff to the Texas Longhorns, the Clemson Tigers decided to part ways with one of their coaches. And it sounds like they have decided on his replacement.
Clemson decided to part ways with defensive coordinator Wes Goodwin after the season, leaving the team in need of someone else to run the defense. And it sounds like Clemson has chosen someone new.
According to a report from college football insider Pete Thamel of ESPN, Clemson is working on hiring Penn State defensive coordinator Tom Allen, who is also the former head coach of the Indiana Hoosiers.
“Sources: Clemson is working toward a deal to hire Penn State DC Tom Allen as the school’s new defensive coordinator. He’s the top target and a final decision is expected in the upcoming days,” Thamel said in a post on X, the social media website that was formerly known as Twitter.
“Allen is the former head coach at Indiana and has been a DC at Indiana and South Florida. He also spent three years at Ole Miss as an assistant.”
The Clemson defense struggled this season against top teams, so the team felt that it need to make a coaching change on that side of the ball.
Over the years, Clemson has been known for its dominance on the defensive side of the ball, but that really has not been the case since the departure of previous defensive coordinator Brent Venables.
We’ll have to see how Allen is able to perform for the Tigers and if he can get the Clemson defense back to dominance.
