Ohio State Buckeyes head coach Ryan Day and his new offensive coordinator Chip Kelly have a long history together with Day playing under Kelly at the college level and then serving as an assistant working under him at both the college and NFL levels. But now, roles are reversed at Ohio State.
During his first press conference since becoming the offensive coordinator at Ohio State, Chip Kelly addressed the new dynamic with Day, joking about the change.
“He makes me call him ‘sir,’” Kelly joked according to On3. “He just said, ‘Can you do that Day 1?’ And I was like, ‘Alright, Ry.’”
All jokes aside, however, Kelly does seem to understand his role with Ohio State even after serving as a head coach at the college and NFL level for nearly a decade and a half.
“No, I certainly understand my role. I’m not Al Hake. Like, I’m not in charge here,” Kelly said. “I certainly understand that, and I actually kind of relish it. I really love the scheming part. I love the individual part. I love being in the meeting room and trying to game plan. But everything we do here’s collaborative.”
We’ll have to see how this arrangement works for the Buckeyes.
