When news broke that Texas Longhorns starting quarterback Quinn Ewers would be out during this week’s game after sustaining a shoulder injury, many thought the injury could provide a chance for highly-touted five-star freshman quarterback Arch Manning to make his first college start. But it doesn’t sound like that’s going to happen.
Even though Arch Manning got first-team reps during practice this week and had a chance to prove that he should be the replacement for Quinn Ewers, Texas Longhorns head coach Steve Sarkisian announced on Thursday afternoon that second-year quarterback Maalik Murphy will get the start instead.
“Maalik’s going to start the game and go play in this game,” Sarkisian announced on Thursday afternoon according to On3. “I haven’t made a decision if I want to get Arch in there just to get him in there or not, but we have discussed that some because I do think there’s some valuable experience for him in that. But, I have to make that’s in the best interest of the team.”
Even though Manning won’t start the game, Sarkisian did not rule out the possibility of putting Manning in the game to get him some valuable in-game experience, so we’ll have to see whether or not that happens.
