Ahead of this weekend’s Elite Eight game between NC State and Texas, the NCAA became aware that the three-point lines on the court were not consistent distances away from the basket. And legendary Stanford Cardinal head coach Tara VanDerveer was not at all happy about the mishap.
Tara VanDerveer and the Cardinal faced off against NC State on the court in the Sweet 16 before the mistake was determined, and she called out the NCAA for allowing something like that to happen, calling it “inexcusable and unfair to every team that played on it.”
“When you arrive at a gym, especially in the NCAA Tournament, at the very least you expect the baskets to be 10 feet and the floor markings to be correct,” VanDerveer said according to On3. “For an error of that magnitude to overshadow what has been an incredible two weekends of basketball featuring sensational teams and incredible individual performances is unacceptable and extremely upsetting.”
VanDerveer is a coaching legend. She’s been a head coach in Division I women’s basketball since 1978 and has led Stanford to three NCAA Tournament titles. Needless to say, she’s seen a lot during her coaching career, but it’s safe to say that she’s never seen something like this before.
