Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay is one of the most successful coaches of his era. He also used to be one of the league’s most sleep-deprived.
McVay revealed to ESPN’s Stephen Holder that he used to have long work days. And not just your average workday either: He meant an 18-hour workday.
If that sounds insane, it’s probably because it is. Nonetheless, it was true. And in hindsight, McVay regrets the decision to be such a maniac.
“I used to think it was cool to think you can go 18 hours,” McVay told ESPN’s Stephen Holder. “You know what that is? That’s called being a dumbass.”
McVay’s bluntness is probably the funniest part of the quote, as you can imagine the delivery likely landed too. Coaching is a 24/7 job, and sometimes, it seems some take it too seriously. Now, perhaps those retirement rumors make sense if he regrets 18-hour workdays.
Nonetheless, McVay and the Rams have been one of the best teams in the league since he took over. He’s led them to two Super Bowl appearances, including a win in Super Bowl LVI over the Cincinnati Bengals.
The NFL world reacted to the hilarious comments that McVay made.
The idea of a football coach “working” 18 hours a day is laughable. It’s got to be identical to when a CEO claims they work long hours and their schedule includes “working out”, “eating a meal” or “reading”. Just add in “watching football videos” and “thinking about football” https://t.co/Sn0AzC14Tz

One of the workplace cultures is the grinder-culture where people believe that if they just stay at their desk longer than the next guy they’ll get ahead
