Over the course of the past month, LeBron James has established himself as the clear leader of the United States men’s basketball team as it attempts to win its fifth consecutive Olympic gold medal.
And the the Los Angeles Lakers star’s strong showing in pre-tournament exhibitions, as well as his status as the male flagbearer for the opening ceremony has resulted in him receiving a new nickname: Captain LeMerica.
While James was initially bestowed the nickname after carrying the flag in last Friday’s opening ceremony, it gained steam with his 21-point, nine-assist, seven-rebound performance in Team USA’s win over Serbia on Sunday, which marked its first official game of the 2024 Paris Olympics. And on Monday, the “Captain LeMerica” nickname became official, as it was added to added to James’ player profile on Basketball-Reference.com.

“Captain LeMerica” joins James’ laundry list of preexisting nicknames, which, according to Basketball-Reference, include King James, LBJ, Chosen One, Bron-Bron, The Little Emperor, The Akron Hammer, L-Train and Benjamin Buckets. It remains to be seen how the four-time MVP feels about the new moniker and whether it will carry over into his NBA career or remain an Olympics-only nickname moving forward.
