Commanders Darrell Green Brett Davis-USA TODAY Sports

The Washington Commanders made a massive announcement on Monday that has the sports world buzzing. Pro Football Hall of Famer Darrell Green will receive an overdue honor, as the team announced they will retire Green’s jersey.

No Commander will ever wear the No. 28 again after the announced ceremony, which will take place in Week 6 of the upcoming NFL season.

The Commanders made the announcement on X, the website formerly known as Twitter.

Darrell Green is one of the best players in Washington franchise history. He earned All-Pro honors four times, made seven trips to the Pro Bowl, and earned a spot on the NFL’s 1990s All-Decade Team. Green was also named to the 100th Anniversary All-Time team and one of the 80 greatest players in Washington franchise history.

Green also won two Super Bowls with Washington: Super Bowl XXII and Super Bowl XXVI.

In all, he led a career that lasted twenty years. Green won four Fastest Man competitions in the NFL and is regarded as one of the fastest NFL players ever. He also holds numerous NFL records, including the most consecutive seasons with at least one interception (19). The all-time great also holds the Washington record for most career interceptions, starts, games played, and most pick-sixes.

The sports world was buzzing over this announcement.
